New finds

I've been needing a runner for our bedroom for sometime now, and thankfully Marshalls pulled through for me yesterday. They have some fantastic rugs there right now ( quite a few are being clearanced, lots of trellis, lots of large florals )

I came home with this guy for $49, not a bad price for wool. I love love this rug. I wish they had several sizes.

You might remember that I had this DIY shade up that I did last year:

FAIL.

However, because of the amount of heat that came through that window ( west side ) It melted the glue, last summer, breaking the plastic mini blinds underneath the delicate linen fabric. It was a major fail. I frantically went to all my other roman shades and put fresh glue on them. I ended up just buying bamboo shades for like $14 at JCP. I'll be adding drapes in the next few weeks.

Moving on.

I have been looking for a couple cheap white soup tureens for bulbs this spring. (centerpiece for the table, and for the kitchen counter )

They arent cheap.

But I got lucky and found this lil guy for $3 on clearance at a thrift store. Score!

What am I growing you might ask?

Onions.

The green onions that you buy at your grocery store. Just submerge the roots in water after you chop them, and they'll grow 1/2 inch a day. The growth you see above? That's about a week's growth.

YOU are good enough. Don't let things like pinterest or design/makeup/lifestyle whatever blogs make you discontent. It's easy to compare, to become envious of others, but we need to stop. We should be more uplifting and more supportive to eachother. I found myself being bothered by people commenting on facebook photos, saying "oh I just saw this on pinterest!" and I am often discouraged that a lot of people assume every idea comes from there. I heard a friend say, oh did you see so and so's new home photos on her blog? It's perfect! And my friend felt so lousy and belittled, like she can't live up. How many of us do this? I guarantee that most of those gorgeous homes you see on pinterest are set up for magazine shoots, and that is it. They dont look like that everyday.
Do the best YOU can. If YOU are happy in your space, then that's all that matters. I compare myself constantly, I pick my house apart all the time. ( my poor house! ) But truth is, when I step away from pinterest, when I stop checking my favorite blogs and stop paying attention so much to others, I realize I am indeed, content.
It goes back to the old question...If you had enough, could you recognize it?
I'm going to strive to be a better blogger. I was distracted for a bit, worrying too much about what ya'll think, but I promise to keep blogging like the real 27 yr old wife and mom that I am. I make mistakes all the time with decor decisions or diy fails. I will be sure to post more of those, so we can all have a good laugh. I have tried to write this out so many times to make it flow and sound professional or whatever, but this is just me talking to you.

I went to ZGallerie for the second time in my life ( we finally got one an hour away from me ) and I got this cute canister on clearance for $10 ( the lid had broke so they clearanced the base. Color blocking

I love fashion. And I really love that color blocking is the trend for spring/summer 2012. I thought it would be fun to translate color blocking from fashion, to interior design. I love this so much, that I'm going to start a series a couple times a month, translating fashion ( an outfit, or accessories..) to the home ( in a room, a product...)
I went overboard with this one, because I love it so much. Enjoy!

Just a quick note, Crate and Barrel is a great source for bright solids for the home, and Forever 21 is really pushing color blocking in their stores right now.

Open Closets

I have a room upstairs that does not have a closet. And of course, it's the largest room in the house. Right now I have a mirrored armoire and hooks on the wall, and a dresser. But I think this summer I will tackle this issue. I've been loving the idea of an open closet. It's cheap, it's organized and it's easy to do without hiring someone to actually build out a closet. Here's my inpiration...

My rugs arrived!

Well, I waited 3.5 weeks for the rugs from rugsusa.com to arrive! The customer service isnt too great over there, but for what I paid, I can't compain too much.

Here's the $27 Chunky Jute Rug, I LOVE it. It's cushy and heavy.

The care for a jute rug is basically just vacuum vacuum vacuum. This thing just eats dirt and is durable. No scrubbing or washing necessary.

And here is the $64 moroccan rug in 5x8

That is the true color, I didnt adjust it. It claims to be a charcoal but it's truly navy blue, which is fine by me!

Nate Berkus Show no more.

Did you hear? Nate Berkus Show got the axe. It received a 1.1 rating, which puts it at the lowest rated talk show on television.
Ouch.

I like his style and like his design line. In fact, HSN just restocked the dhurrie rug ( I own and adore the blue one ) and added some more products.

The Quilt

This might get lengthy, it's personal, you've been warned.

I'm very sentimental, like most moms, of my daughters clothes. Over the 4 years of her life, I've carefully packed away clothes in bins, that she's outgrown. Not only for the sentimental reasons, but for the hope that one day we'll finally get pregnant with #2, and if it's a girl, that she'd get to wear these clothes.

But my feelings began to change and decided that's no way to enjoy memories of someone, all packed up in a box. I wanted a quilt made of the clothes that made up her first year of life. I found Barbara Malm via Etsy and immediately contacted her. I was so emotional about this whole process, and nervous as all get out. Sending 50 of my only child's most meaningful clothes away to a stranger across the country, was a bit nerve racking, but Barbara was so sweet and patient.

I stuck post its on most of the clothes with little notes of what pieces I wanted most use out of etc. ( I warned her ahead of time that I was going to do this, so she didnt think I was a crazy control freak ..*wink* )

Then I packed them up and sent them over to Barbara. There was great communication between us, she really listened to what I wanted, and she also had great insight as well.

In a few short weeks, I received my quilt. I was so happy.

Then I cried.

Then I went into the ugly cry. But I wont be showing those pictures.

This quilt is about 70x70, it's huge and heavy, and so soft.

I couldnt be more pleased with her work. I highly HIGHLY recommend you check her out here.

Craigslist Follies.

It's that time again. Here's a few of my latest favorite craigslist follies.

$200 for a set that I would either see on the side of the road, or for $25 at a thrift store:

Ironically, this is a lighted cabinet. The picture is too dark.

This one might take the cake. These people are dreaming.

Actually, THIS one takes the cake $2300. Again, I dont know when this was in style, look at those bed posts will ya?

This one is unfortunate, because he could have listed it for atleast $50 if it were tagged with spindle or jenny lind. And setting it up instead of laying it in a pile. I did write him to give him a heads up.

This is just a good example of an unfortunate picture. It's like, what am I buying again? Were you getting high when you took this pic, because they're so smoky. If set up properly, with a good pic, he might have fetched $100 for the set. Unless that really is smoke, then maybe not so much.

Brass is back.

If you havent heard by now, Brass is making a comeback in 2012. More specifically brass lighting. Which thrills me because I already have a few brass pieces/hardware throughout my house by default ( like my very very old switchplates and a lamp or 2) I've always been sorta drawn to it because of the nautical feel it gives off. Elf on the Shelf

Our family, and millions of others have jumped on the Elf on the Shelf tradition this year. I cant believe how hot it is. Those authors were brilliant. My daughter loves trying to find our elf every morning.

I started to do research on this, wanting to know the origin of this idea. Yesterday, while shopping at my favorite antique store, I came across this lil guy:
It kinda made me want to look for more original ones, considering this one was only $3.

Did you know these were actually created in Japan? Indeed they were, in the 1960s by a company called "Yuletide of Japan" and were called kneehugger elves. So if you want to invest in these little guys and have an original, checkout etsy and ebay and search knee hugger elf ( or kneehugger ) they are usually cheap, unless they have "made in japan" somewhere on them ( worth more )

Pottery Barn Knockoff?

Man I havent done a Pottery Barn knockoff in forever! It's about time.

Years ago I swooned over this Pottery Barn "emma" rug. Big beautiful green and blue flowers, and too expensive for my wallet.

By the time I saved up for it, they retired it.
So I ended up buying THIS Martha rug from Home Decorators. For the 8x10 I paid half the price I would've for Emma. ( remember that Home Decorators always has coupons online )

While browsing Overstock for a client, I came across this waverly rug. Mind you, it's not wool, it's polypropylene.

New Pillows

Last week I posted photos of my daughters room, only to realize I wasnt satisfied with the pillow situation. I've been looking to add quilt like linens in her room, but usually any pillow or bedding with the word quilt tied to it has $$$ attached.

But I got lucky at Marshalls last night and found Carole Little Pillows on Clearance for $8 EACH.

I'm very pleased with them! Cant beat $24 for 3 pillows. And I found a gift card in my wallet, so I really only paid $15 for all :) That love pillow reminds me of something you'd find at Pottery Barn Teen.

Mini Jarred Cheesecakes

I want to say a welcome to the readers of Thrifty Northwest Mom! And thank you to Jen for featuring my cheesecakes recipe on her wonderful blog! Go check out the many daily deals she so diligently posts.

Now for the cheesecake....

This is a huge hit during the holidays, not only to bring to a party but as a gift to your neighbors, friends and family. Plus, the topping possibilities are nearly endless! So use your imagination. The jars are half pint, and I got them at my local store ( Fred Meyer ) but have seen them at other hardware stores and Safeway as well. They were $10 for the dozen.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups of Crushed Graham Crackers

1/4 cup of Sugar

¼ cup of Butter, Melted

3 pkgs of 8oz Cream Cheese, Softened

1 can of 14oz Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT evaporated milk )

3 Eggs

2 Tsp Vanilla ( I eyeball it )

12 Half Pint Jars

Very few steps, cheap ingredients, and very little time, you can do this. Ready?

1. Make a Graham Cracker Crust, Grab your kids for this part of it, because it's easy and they can smash stuff: Mix together crushed crackers, butter and sugar.

2. Press equally on the bottoms of the jars, it's about two large spoonfuls. You can use your fingers, I used a glass cork because it happened to be laying nearby. Otherwise, I'm usually not that fancy :)

3. Filling: Whip the cream cheese until it's fluffy, then slowly add the condensed milk. When that is smooth, add the eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Now dip your finger in that goodness. Need more vanilla? Add another splash. Did you know that Vanilla is an aphrodisiac? *wink*

4. With a large spoon, evenly distribute the filling into the jars. It should not reach the top. You'll now need a couple large casserole dishes or deep baking pans, fill them with boiling hot water so that the water line hits to about half of the jar. Carefully put them in the oven at 350 for 25 minutes.

5. Now go clean up. There's bound to be cheesecake filling on multiple surfaces and your sink, full. You'll thank yourself later for doing so !

At 25 minutes, take a peak in the oven, they should still jiggle and look firm (some may have tiny cracks) but they shouldnt be golden brown or anything.

THIS is the hardest part. Turn your oven off, send the kids out of the kitchen and grab your best hot gloves/pads. SLOWLY and VERY CAREFULLY take these boiling dishes out of the oven. It is a balancing act, but remember this is scolding hot water. Dont be intimidated though. I mean, you may lose a hand in the process, but the cheesecakes taste amazing so it's worth it.

Ok, are they all out? Did you survive? Everything in tact?

Take the jars out of the water bath and set them on the counters to cool. I usually put them in the fridge right away when I need them that night. They do take 1-2 hours to cool, so take that into consideration if you are wanting to serve them.

I chose to use mini chocolate chips and raspberries. For the raspberry ones, I mashed up a few with sugar to make a quicky jam and spread that on, then added the berries on top, it was a hit. You can do the same with blackberries or strawberries. Use your imagination on this one!

This recipe is super old ( thanks mom ) and I've always done it with baking cups ( same recipe, but makes about 30 cupcake sized cheesecakes ) and it's always a hit. The canned cherries are very festive on these cheesecakes, just plop 3 cherries/syrup down on them and add a sprig of holly, they look so cool.

Not sure what it is about this time of the year, but my luck reappears, and in a big way.

1.For instance...a few weeks back you may have heard that HAUTELOOK sent out $20 Certificates for Nordstrom Rack ( no catches, no minimum, just $20. ) Well I had 2 accounts with them, one I didnt know I had, and they honored both, so I got $40 free to spend at Nordstrom Rack.

2. Deal number two, was I received a mailer from Victorias Secret for $10 off $10, no exclusions. So I got a stocking stuffer. FREE. So be on the lookout for this one, I got it on Thursday I believe.

3. Lastly, another deal you should be aware of..I received the $10 off $10 JCP Coupon last week and after reading the rules I noticed that there werent any major exclusions ( other than the obvious Sephora ) including salon stuff. ( coupon looks similiar to this, keep your eyes peeled!)

After confirming with the salon that they will honor the coupon on products, I saw that OPI nail polish was buy 1 get 1 50% off. Score.

I got 2 OPI's for $3. If you're familiar with OPI you know this is a killer deal.

So to recap, I got $40 to the Rack, $10 to Victorias Secret and $10 JCP. There are deals to be had this holiday season! So check twice before you go throw out those ads :)

Christmas at my house.

I went pretty simple on the tree this year..I have birdies and houses throughout ( $1 at Joanns, I just painted/glittered them ) This is the cheapest 8ft noble we've ever got our hands on, paying $40 ( we always pay between $75-90, yikes, I know ) I bought a $3 can of snow spray and lightly flocked it. My only advice for this is to go HEAVIER than you think on it, because it DOES melt a bit and thin out.

I wish I did more. But oh well.

The tree isnt totally complete, I think I'll still add red ribbon to it.
The stockings have Pottery Barn Initial wine charms on them, it was actually cheaper to buy them than to make them.

My girl's room

I finally got around to rearranging my daughter's room. It needed a change.

I do still plan on using her antique hand mirrors, just havent hung them yet.
The next thing to do is get new curtains. These white things were supposed to be temporary...but here we are a year later. I never even put finials on the rods. How embarrassing.

I used to want to paint that wood wall. It's grown on me so much, if I did anything to it, I'd stain it darker, but isnt it great?

The dining cabinet

Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! I have lots of Christmas posts coming up this week, but to start them off, thought I'd post my primitive cabinet. I'll be honest, it's still growing on me. I know I wont have it here forever, but it serves the purpose for now.
It actually came with doors on it, and the inside wasnt painted. But the doors make it too heavy looking and dark for the space so I opted to remove them for now. The other option I'm debating is painting it a distressed blue in the spring. But we'll see.

Here she is.

You can see the very bottom of the cabinet still needs to be painted, but I'm also looking at putting either baskets or antique boxes under there.

And yes, those are felt birdies on top. I decorate with birds for Christmas, Pics of my tree to come.

Well this didnt work out as smoothly as I had intended. I've been so tired of my dining buffet/wine shelves for the longest time, as they dont serve their purpose so much anymore. I have too many things and not enough space. I knew I'd be able to sell it right away, with them being Pottery Barn and all. ( this is an old pic )

So I promptly listed it on Craigslist and within hours, it was hauled away.
I was nervous and excited to make a change. This wall needs something more substantial anyways.
I jumped in my suv, ready to go get the product I'm ultimately going to get, and called the store just in case.
Alas, they've been out of stock for weeks. With no delivery date in site.

FAIL.

So thanks to my impulsive sale, this wall ( which is a lot bigger than the picture shows ) sits empty..
And my dining table is cluttered with serveware, dishes and glasses. And my kitchen is overflowing. Til who knows when. *le sigh*

So, the lesson here, boys and girls, make sure you either already HAVE the piece of furniture you desire, or atleast make sure it's in stock. I should know better.

Black Kitchen Countertops

The story of the "magic eraser"

It's no secret that my 2 favorite cleaning products are bleach, and magic erasers.
Years ago I started using the name brand "Magic Eraser" and paid about $6-7 for a box of four.

Later, I discovered the cheap version at the dollar tree, 2 for $1. I was flyin high.

HERE is a post I did with a quick before/after of my kitchen sink using this and another product

All along, I'm thinking, gosh, what IS this material? This magic material? After some simple google work, I found my answer.

They are made of melamine foam. Same stuff that has been used as insulation in pipes, ductwork, and sound proofing material. Sounds appealing huh.

So no more paying a whole dollar for 2. No no, ladies and gents, I give you $8.90 for 30 melamine foam pads. THIRTY. I go through one to two a week. ( I should probably start cutting them in half to make them go further ) It's via ebay and it's a reputable seller, in the USA. Click HERE to go there.

If you havent used these yet, here's a convincing list:

1. Outdoor Furniture and Toys

Take grungy white resin or white painted furniture by lightly scrubbing with an eraser cleaning block. The eraser gets into crevices and cracks while leaving paint finishes intact. The same principle applies to outdoor plastic toys.

2. Pool Liners

Pool owners, this will make your life easier: A gentle scrubbing on your liner will get rid of the water mark better than any other product.

3. Vinyl

Take an eraser to scuffs on just about anything made from vinyl: siding, boat seats, shoes, etc.

4. Car Interiors

Clean the car seats with an eraser block: Go lightly on leather, but it's okay on fabric and vinyl, lightly scrub the car steering wheel. Eraser blocks get rid of grease streaks left inside after the car's been to the shop, too.

5. Hubcaps

Clean your car's hubcaps with an eraser for a water-free car wash.

6. Refrigerator

Get rid of last year's drippings that are pooled in the back of the fridge. It'll take a whole eraser block, but it gets the job done. The seals that have gotten a bit black and moldy will also respond well to an eraser.

7. Dishwasher Interior

What are those colors inside your dishwasher from time to time? Lime, mold, ewww. Just take an eraser to them and the stains will banish.

8. Bathtub and Sinks

Getting rid of dirt and water marks is easier (and not so gross) with an eraser block. Bathtubs can take a tough scrub, but go lightly on sinks -- even a light scrub gets rid of that caked on dirt that you often can't see until you try to get it off.

9. Rust Removal

Scrub anywhere (around pipes in kitchen and bath) that you see rust.

10. Computer

A magic eraser gets rid of oil and dirt that has built up on your keyboard and mouse; you can use it on laptops, too.

11. Phones

Use one on your phone's mouthpiece, too -- it gets rid of the same grime that builds up on your computer.

12. Bugs

Wherever there are smooshed bugs (porch pillars, car windshields, interior walls, exterior doors, exterior light fixtures) wipe them away with an eraser block.

13. Glass Stove Tops
No need to have special stove top cleaner on hand, get rid of burned-on food by lightly scrubbing until the gunk is gone.

14. Dishes and Glassware
Rub hard-to-clean build-up off of thrift store dishes and glassware, like Pyrex bowls, following advice from the blog Pyrex Love.

15. Gutters

Get rid of green slime that builds up on gutters with an eraser. It's another ewww-worthy task, but it'll be almost effortless with an eraser.

16. Mirrors (and Windows)

Many fans of eraser blocks swear it gives them a streak-free and clean mirror, if the pad is slightly damp when you give it a light scrub.

17. Floors

Erase scuff marks, old paint drips-great for most floors (but always go lightly, especially on finished wood).

18. Grout

Which leads us to grout. The eraser does well with most grout (except really old and darkened-beyond-help grout that will remain gray even with best scrubbing efforts).

19. Granite countertops

Everyone is afraid to scrub granite, but an eraser pad, used at first gently and then with a little more oomph as the stains disappear, will indeed get stubborn stains out of granite.

20. Leather

You can use and eraser lightly on leather upholstery, purses or shoes to lift up marks -- just be sure to use a gentle touch.

(Disclaimer-never use eraser cleaning blocks to clean skin, animal fur, glossy, brushed, satin or dark painted surfaces-including appliances, and lastly, never use on delicate fabrics.)

I go back and forth about getting the large Ikea Expedit. Sometimes I see it and think, man that looks cheap. Other times I like it. I realize it IS how you style it etc. I think it's the predictable laquered ikea look that bothers me...but the practicality that attracts me.

I made a trip to Ikea to get specific things, only to leave with a few more things that werent on the list as well as a list for the next trip.

To my delight, they have pretty velvety pillow covers for cheap! In Euro size( $13! ), and a 16x24" size($7). The gray Euros would look so plush on a bed.

I bought this lil navy guy. Such a great deal.( Comes in a few other colors and feather inserts are only $7! )

The line is called "Sanela" and they also have great drapes as well. I'm swooning over the navy drapes, I'm impressed by the quality, as they dont have that cheap look to them.

I also got tired of not having a light fixture up in the landing, so I took apart the Capiz Shell lamp that's been in my daughters room..

Little Footstool Makeover

I got this little footstool ottoman for free in the spring. He's been gathering cobwebs and dust in my garage, until yesterday I realized how much I needed him.

So here's the before: (pink, and lopsided foam )

It aint perfect, but I love 'em.

I realize lanterns can be found at most stores, but this one is unique because of it's short square shape!

This street couple blocks away from me, these leaves look like watercolors, blending so well, it's so fantastic.

I also did this lil project I saw on a blog once, just bought those old white light globes that you've probably seen at the thrift store ( mine were 99cents each ) threw some old ( half working ) christmas lights in them and voila. A lit path to the chicken coop. ( one strand for all 3, they are the smaller globes ) I'll add some for the other side as well.

My evolution to pinterest

Years ago I started a binder. This binder was filled with magazine pages, articles and fabric swatches. It was organized by room type, and it was when I started to really appreciate home decor. I was dating my husband and still living at home, while dreaming of what my home would look like someday.

Once I was married and bought a laptop, I evolved from magazine clippings to saving photos off magazine websites, online stores, public boards and flickr. I mean, it's what you did, right? ( this is the condensed version)

2011 I was introduced to pinterest. I didnt understand the hype at first, I'll admit. I just didnt get the purpose. But now I do. It's genius, and I'm bugged I didnt come up with it first! I've enjoyed going through my old decor files and pinning them to pinterest. And I'm sure my hard drive is happy now.

Woodsy Baby Shower

When I told my friend Steph ( Mason Jar Photography )that I wanted to do a wood themed baby boy shower for our friend Michelle, I know she probably thought, wha?! But she had faith ( thanks S ) and headed to the woods to find "pretty" logs and stumps.

I did "s'mores on a stick" ( simply marshmallows dipped in melted chocolate, then dipped in crushed graham crackers ) and my lovely husband drilled holes in the log for them. The other holder is just styrofoam covered in burlap.

For the mini caramel apples, I just took a melon baller to apples, patted them dry, dipped them in caramel ( the tubs you find next to the apples in the store ) and dipped them in crushed peanuts. I chose to put them in the baking cups because they DO melt over time.

Moss is from Michaels and Dollar Tree. And yes, half of it is real :)

The favors were done by my friend Steph, she nailed it. S'mores to go.

And a couple tips to help the longevity of your carved pumpkins..

Put one of those bags of silica beads you get when you buy new shoes, or purses or wallets inside the pumpkin. It'll suck up some of the moisture..but PLEASE NOTE: Do not take the gels out of the bag. Keep them in the bag. I have not tried this method yet, but I will.

Semi-Homemade Rosemary Olive Oil

Last year, my dear friend Kelly gifted me rosemary olive oil. I thought this was such a great idea, and it was DELICIOUS. Especially months and months after you make it, the leaves start falling off the stems and it's so yum.

I have a massive rosemary bush in my backyard, and I found these awesome $3.99 Bottles from World Market.

Lightly rinse off your rosemary, dab it with a paper towel, and let it air dry, completely. NO wet rosemary.

It's much easier and less messy if you put the stems in before you pour the oil in. I usually clip off the top, as it's more limp, and you want the woodier stalk on the bottom. Make sense?

And Voila! Of course you can use it right away, but just like wine, it's better with age. It's a healthy, fairly inexpensive gift. There's only 3 months until Christmas....

Backyard Progress

This corner of the backyard has a purpose now. Finally. From a rotten old playhouse, to dirt, to now a chicken coop, it's finally pleasant to look at.
There's still just a few minor details to be finished, like accessories and naming these girls. They are 2 year old barred rock hens. I will be doing a full chicken post next week explaining our adventures in owning "urban" chickens

Well, the day finally came. My sweet little girl is off to preschool. I am very big on tradition, so this is a start of many years of this.

By the way, it IS true, that if you preheat your oven to 350, put the cupcakes in, lower it to 325 for 25 minutes, they do come out "fuller"...in fact, I couldve filled my liners up a bit more. These are good ol' boxed Cherry Chip Cake Mix, Frosting, Sprinkles, Sour Candy "tape", and a pretzel stick. Cheap and easy and pleasing to the eye.

Laundry Room Updates

Can you tell I got my camera back? It's been in Africa with my husband, and so obviously I have catching up to do.

My laundry room has been neglected. It's big and boring. The washer and dryer are to the left and to the right, around the corner is an armoire.
Here it is today, with the new additions...
I found those antique fruit crates free on the side of the road, just hung them with a nail. The benches are from the old dining table, and that coat rack was an old $5 ledge that I added hardware to. My favorite is the $24.99 Schoolhouse Light from Lowes. ( Lowes has way better lights than HD in my opinion )

I just snapped these, I still need to "edit" the accessories and fix a few things, but you get my point.

My pretty little free finds

As I've said before, I have a normal person's income. I dream of extravagant things but I rarely ever pay retail and I'm always ALWAYS looking for items to flip for extra cash.

Take this for example.
FREE on the side of the road was this pretty little antique pie/jelly cupboard. She's got the original ( broken ) glass and skinny little shelves inside. I dont have an exact NEED for her right now, but I put it on craigslist just to see who would bite. If I sell her as is, I'll get around $125 for it.

Also FREE, was this Ikea ottoman. Ya it's kind of ugly and wobbly and needed screws, but I quickly fixed that. I'll be working on a slipcover for this in the weeks to come.

My "big girl" table.

I have the same dining table for 5 years. Shes been good to me. This little picnic style rubberwood table has done the job. I bought it, along with the benches, for a grand total of $60 on clearance.

Alas, I have been dreaming of a Modern Round Pedestal 60" Table ( without a leaf..) for a while now. I entertain quite a bit, and 4-6 seats isnt cutting it. I need 6-8. It's impossible to find one under $1,000 without the leaf and espresso color. And I'm too frugal to pay that much for a table.
A few of the table's I've been swooning over are like these..
Crate and Barrel's Orion and Pearse Tables ( $900 and $1500 )

Or even this 60" round classic pedestal table for $1200

Well my patience paid off. I found it on craigslist. For $300 ( she couldnt remember if it was a crate and barrel or a west elm ) How did I earn that money? By selling my old table for $125 ( i paid 60 for it WITH the benches ) and $150 for an old Pottery Barn shelving unit ( that I paid $45 for originally ) So it was like swapping out, pretty much. It's kind of my rule, I cannot buy a piece of furniture unless I sell something else first.

I will have to buy 2 more seagrass chairs to fill it out, and probably recenter my chandelier.

It's got a great texture to it and does not have a scratch on it.

Urban Chickens?

When I approached my husband with the idea of getting some hens, he said yes before I could finish my sentence. ( He comes from a family of farmers ) We have the perrrfect spot for a good size chicken coop and how great to have our daughter growing up with the thrill of finding the eggs in the nests.
So I quickly jumped online to look at coop plans. I was blown away.

Truth be told, it's still not done. There are still details on it that need to be stapled down, but since it's just to look at really, that stuff can wait some more :) Upholstery is not for the faint of heart, dont let anyone fool you, it's tough work...and that is why I kept putting it off.

The fabric is Dwell ( from Joanns, I think I got 8yds for $105...so I saved over $100 on it, I have a ton left over. )
The wingback settee was $15 on Craigslist
The new foam was $30

This type of staple remover will be your bff...

Also, if you can, get an electric staple gun

If you're serious about this project, buy this book: ( has step by step and pics )

I used the trace and cut method, as opposed to ripping everything to shreds and starting from scratch. So the best advice from me, is to draw a big letter on every piece of fabric with a sharpie marker and take a picture of all sides, and draw it out. ...this is amateur sketch from another chair I'm workin on..

This way you know exactly where each piece goes and you can trace it onto your new fabric :)

Check this out. I love love this find. Cost: $8...It's a lil porcelain urn lamp! How fabulous is this? Eight bucks! He's small, only stands maybe 10 inches tall.

And this find, I'm stoked about. It's an original Potjie Pot ( cast iron )..the real thing. $5. FIVE. FIVE!!! It's worth over $80 easy.

I never do this, but I must post a pet peeve. There are a couple ladies with very popular home blogs, that airbrush their babies/pictures of themselves. And very obviously enhance their eyes.
What happened to being real?! Especially with kids. Dont you feel guilty "enhancing" your children's faces in pictures? Upping the vibrance on a photo is one thing, but making them look like china dolls freaks me out. Love your kids as they are, God made them. This coming from someone who desperately wants another child.

My goal is to have a "new" kitchen by the end of 2012. "New" meaning hiring a professional to paint the cabinets white, new hardware, banquette ( get rid of the corner island ), and most importantly NEW countertops.
Here's my current kitchen. Well, most of it.

So here's me thinking outloud:

Open shelving always draws me in, and these cabinets are the same as mine so it does help visualize them as white. Marble countertops for the win.

Simple yet modern. Crazy about the black windows

Green/Gray Kitchen Tiles are cool, white/gray granite ( what I am trying to get my hands on as an alternative to marble )

Maybe someday I'll have a window like this over my sink :) I do love the fabric and the wide farmhouse sink

This ceiling is bananas.

Here's another white granite..and I have floors like that, I mop every other day...

These are the type of cabinets I have ( shaker ) and ultimately I love this entire look

So instead go to Vintage Printables, Find a print you love, Take it to kinkos and blow it up. It'll cost you a few bucks.

Window RePurpose

I had to do somethin with this cute lil square window, salvaged from the playhouse.

So I ran to Home Depot and picked up some awesome hooks where the red paint was showing...

Hung it up, and Voila. It's my calendar/weekly meal planner. Ignore the wobbly lines..I didnt take the time to use a ruler...next month :) I just flipped it over and the other side was a great greenish white color.

Outside Projects

I've been visiting family in Minnesota, and now I'm back with some updates. The weather is finally beautiful and I 've needed it so bad.

Anyways, This is a very old little play house/junk yard that's attached to our shed. The wood is all rotted and we havent touched it since we moved in 3 years ago. (front)

Sick, huh? The plan has been to empty the rooms out, level the ground, and I'll show you a drawing of the garden we'll create out of this space in my next post.

But to my huge surprise, my parents worked their butts off while I was out of town and did all the demo for me. I had already taken one load to the dump before, and they did all the hard work. Unreal. They are so cool.

So here it is today. Nice and bare.

Maybe boring to you, but it's been such an eyesore and unused space for too long.

I also came home to happy plants.
